Invited Speakers

Professor Mark Allen, Alfred Fitler Moore Professor, Electrical and Systems Engineering (ESE) and Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (MEAM), and Director, Singh Center for Nanotechnology, University of Pennsylvania. He is a pioneer in the field of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), and nano fabrication technology and inaugural Scientific Director of the Krishna P. Singh Center for Nanotechnology.

Professor Carlos Bustamante, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Chair in Biophysics, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, Professor of Chemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology, and Physics, University of California, Berkeley. His laboratory develops and applies novel methods of single-molecule manipulation and detection, such as optical tweezers, single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, and super-resolution microscopy.

Professor Mark Kasevich, Professor of Physics, Stanford University. His group develops quantum sensors of rotation and acceleration based on cold atoms with applications including tests of General Relativity to investigations of ultra-fast laser-induced phenomena.

Professor Barrie Mecrow, Professor of Electrical Power, Newcastle University. His research includes developing low cost electrical drives and machines with increased efficiency becoming an increasingly important aspect. He has numerous industrial links, including being the advisor to Rolls-Royce on electrical machines and technical advisors to both Dyson and Protean Electric.

Professor Sheila Rowan, Director, Institute for Gravitational Research, University of Glasgow. Her research interests are directed at gravitational wave detection on the ground and in space. The research programme currently includes studies of ultra sensitive mechanical systems; investigation of materials of ultra-low mechanical loss and construction of mechanically-stable optical systems for interferometric applications.

Professor Adrian Thomas, Professor of Biomechanics, Zoology Department, University of Oxford, and Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Animal Dynamics Ltd. He uses aerodynamic theory to predict optimal morphologies for specific aspects of flight ecology (flight missions), and test the predictions with phylogenetically controlled comparative methods, with mechanical model organisms, and with free-flying or swimming animals in the laboratory, or in the field. His company aims to design super-efficient systems inspired by the deep study of evolutionary biomechanics.
